The FerrySafe Programme has concluded its fifth training module on Safety Management Systems, strengthening efforts to improve passenger safety, operational standards and emergency preparedness across Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The September 2026 training combined international expert mentorship with hands-on onboard exercises, equipping participants with practical knowledge of modern safety management systems and their application in ferry operations.

A major highlight was the programme’s “Ask the Expert” session held on September 23, featuring Mike Corrigan, Chief Executive Officer of Interferry, who shared insights into global safety governance, risk management and operational leadership in the international ferry industry.

The session provided participants with an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge from a leading figure in the global ferry sector, deepening their understanding of international safety standards and best practices.

The module culminated in practical onboard training on September 30, facilitated by Effiong Abasiubong and Samuel Nwosu of Coastal Maritime Academy Lagos.

During the exercise, participants conducted live safety management drills aboard two 60-seater passenger ferries, MF EJIRIN and MF ITESIWAJU, gaining practical experience in safety procedures, emergency preparedness and operational protocols.

The programme expressed appreciation to Hon. Dr. Ladi Balogun, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY), for providing the vessels used for the practical sessions, noting that the support significantly enhanced the training experience.

Special recognition was also given to Shari Corrigan, Director of Conference and Finance at Interferry and Executive Sponsor of FerrySafe, for her continued commitment to advancing ferry safety initiatives.

The organisers equally acknowledged the contributions of Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Lagos State Governor, whose support for the development of the state’s blue economy continues to create opportunities for capacity building and improved waterway safety.

Coastal Maritime Academy Lagos, LAGFERRY vessel crew members, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the Lagos State Government were also commended for their contributions to the successful delivery of the programme.

The FerrySafe Team in Lagos, Nigeria, received commendation for its professionalism and dedication in coordinating the training activities.

The programme coordinators reaffirmed their commitment to improving safety standards across the maritime sector through continuous professional development, international collaboration and practical learning.

With Module 5 completed, FerrySafe has moved on to Module 6, focused on Survey and Inspection, scheduled to run throughout October 2026.

The next module will feature mentorship from internationally recognised surveyors affiliated with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). The training is expected to deepen participants’ knowledge of vessel surveys, inspection procedures, regulatory compliance and maritime safety assurance.

As the programme advances, FerrySafe remains committed to promoting a strong safety culture, professionalism and operational excellence across Africa’s inland waterways.
