On Thursday, July 18, 2024, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) announced the successful rescue of nineteen crew members from the Britania U drilling platform.

The distress signal was received from the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center (RMRCC) in Lagos, indicating that the platform was under distress at the Ajakpa Field (OML 90), located 10.77 nautical miles south of the Forcadoes Terminal.

NIMASA, in collaboration with other responding agencies and first responders, ensured the safe evacuation of all crew members and other exposed individuals during the incident. The coordinated efforts prevented potential casualties and mitigated further risks.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, has established an incident command center within the office of the Agency’s Executive Director of Operations. This center is tasked with preparing an effective response plan tailored to address oil spillages and other incidents impacting marine safety and navigation.

In accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act of 2007, NIMASA’s Marine Accident Investigation Unit has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the direct and indirect causes of the mishap.

The findings of the investigation will be made public, and recommendations will be implemented to enhance maritime safety.
