The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed a circulating report that claims an extension has been granted to the tenure of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
In an official statement issued on April 1, 2025, NCS spokesperson Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada clarified that the information was false and misleading.
He emphasized that only the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has the authority to appoint or extend the tenure of the Comptroller-General, as stipulated in the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other relevant regulations.

“As of this moment, no such directive has been communicated to the NCS by the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.
The NCS reassured the public that it remains focused on its core responsibilities, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security. Under CGC Adeniyi’s leadership, the agency has continued to implement key reforms aimed at modernizing customs operations, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and boosting economic growth.
The Service urged Nigerians and stakeholders to rely on official channels for accurate information and warned against the spread of unverified claims. It reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and service to the nation.
