In a tragic turn of events today, top Deputy Comptroller Etop Andrew Essien of the Nigeria Customs Service collapsed and passed away during a crucial presentation before the House of Representatives.
The 56-year-old Deputy Comptroller, esteemed for his role as the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Revenue in the Account Unit of the NCS, was delivering a report to the National Assembly House Committee on Public Accounts when the incident occurred.
According to reports, Deputy Comptroller Essien, renowned for his meticulous work in revenue reconciliation, began showing signs of discomfort approximately three minutes into his presentation. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, including a request for water, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely death.
Born on November 16, 1967, and a dedicated member of the Nigeria Customs Service since November 27, 1989, Deputy Comptroller Essien hailed from Nsit-Ubium in Akwa Ibom State. He was widely respected for his exemplary service and unwavering commitment to duty, particularly in his role overseeing revenue management.
In response to this tragic loss, Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, expressed deep condolences on behalf of the entire Customs Service, emphasizing the profound impact of Deputy Comptroller Essien’s passing.
“We mourn the loss of a highly valued colleague whose dedication and integrity set a benchmark for us all,” stated the CGC.
“His legacy will endure in our hearts and minds as we continue to uphold the standards he so diligently exemplified.”
Deputy Comptroller Essien is survived by his wife and children. The Nigeria Customs Service pledges its full support to his family during this difficult time, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they need.
