The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the temporary suspension of its food disposal initiative, initiated to alleviate hardships faced by Nigerians and improve access to essential food items.
The decision comes in the wake of an unfortunate incident during the pilot exercise held at NCS Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos state.
The exercise, which began smoothly at 0800hrs on February 23, 2024, saw the cooperation of a large crowd. However, unforeseen challenges arose when the NCS ran out of stock, prompting the announcement of the continuation of the exercise the following day.
This led to a desperate crowd charging through barricades in search of rice bags inside emptied containers, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
The NCS expressed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and assured them of unwavering support. An internal investigation has been initiated to understand the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.
The Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, emphasized the commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerians and acknowledged the need for heightened sensitivity and preventive measures in all operations.
In light of the incident, the NCS has regretfully suspended the food disposal initiative until a thorough understanding of the circumstances is established. The service aims to articulate a more robust and comprehensive action aligned with its noble intention.
The NCS appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all Nigerians as they work towards addressing the challenges facing the nation’s food security.
