Safety First: LASWA Tightens Grip on Ferry Operators in Major Lagos Terminals

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has intensified its safety inspection exercise across major ferry terminals and jetties in Lagos State as part of ongoing efforts to enforce strict compliance with waterways safety regulations and enhance operational standards.
The comprehensive inspection covered several key locations, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut jetties, with particular emphasis on vessel seaworthiness and life jacket safety compliance.
During the operation, LASWA officials confiscated 120 damaged life jackets found to be unfit for passenger use. The Authority immediately removed the hazardous items from circulation, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on substandard safety equipment on Lagos waterways.
Preliminary findings revealed varying levels of compliance among boat operators. While many vessels were found to meet the required safety standards, others were directed to carry out necessary repairs to attain full seaworthiness. LASWA noted that adherence to safety protocols, especially regarding vessel condition and certified life jackets, remains non-negotiable.
The Authority emphasized that routine and unscheduled enforcement exercises will continue across all terminals to ensure total compliance. Operators are reminded that they are legally required to maintain seaworthy boats and provide only certified, functional life jackets to all passengers.
LASWA reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more reliable, and properly regulated water transportation system for residents of Lagos State.
