The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fostering a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Atlantic region.

This commitment was highlighted during his presentation at the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation summit, a sideline session of the 2024 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Addressing global stakeholders, Dr. Mobereola emphasized Nigeria’s role in shaping sustainable policies for the Atlantic region.

“Nigeria’s participation in the Atlantic Cooperation has had a transformative effect on how our government is contributing to shaping acceptable global policies and agendas for a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous Atlantic region,” Mobereola said.

He also noted Nigeria’s recent strides in deep-sea mining, with the government working to establish a legal framework aimed at driving sustainable economic growth.

The NIMASA DG underscored the importance of collaborations between Nigeria and international partners, including the United States, European Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the United Nations, in protecting Nigeria’s coastline and promoting regional economic integration.

Antony Blinken, in his remarks, echoed the significance of the Atlantic Ocean to global security and prosperity.

“Together, we’re fostering greater connections and coordination between our governments, civil societies, private sectors, and scientific communities – laying the groundwork to share solutions to these joint challenges,” Blinken said.

He stressed the need for countries bordering the Atlantic to engage in this collective initiative.

The Atlantic Partnership, which has expanded to include 42 members representing over 75% of the Atlantic coastline, aims to address shared challenges, promote sustainable solutions, and support regional economic integration.

The session concluded with the endorsement of a Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation, advocating for mutual collaboration and respect for varying national capacities and political perspectives.
