The Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) is set to tackle the pressing issues surrounding the Eto call-up system for trucks operating in the maritime sector. In an effort to address the challenges and propose solutions, MARAN will host a breakfast meeting at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

The President of MARAN, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere, expressed concerns over the criticisms facing the Eto call-up system, noting that despite its good intentions, it has been accused of exacerbating traffic crises and facilitating corruption and extortion. Stakeholders have voiced worries that the platform has strayed from its original purpose and reverted to pre-reform conditions.

To address these issues, MARAN aims to fulfill its role as a watchdog and an agenda-setting body by convening this crucial meeting. Discussions will focus on government efforts, particularly by agencies like the Nigerian Ports Authority, to combat challenges associated with the Eto system. Additionally, stakeholders will explore the potential role they can play in improving the situation.

Among the topics slated for discussion is the introduction of e-tag trucks as a potential solution to streamline operations.

The event is expected to draw key figures from various sectors, including the Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola, as well as representatives from the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, the Nigeria Customs Service, shipping companies, terminal operators, and various trucking associations.

MARAN’s initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the complexities of the maritime sector, ultimately aiming to enhance efficiency and transparency in port operations.
