The Lagos State Government has unveiled Africa’s first-ever Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming inland water transportation safety and strengthening Lagos’ position as a leader in maritime innovation on the continent.

Speaking at the official launch on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation and Blue Economy, representing Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, described the programme as a major milestone in the state’s drive to build a safer, smarter, and globally competitive waterways sector.

The 18-month capacity-building initiative, being implemented through the Lagos State Waterways Authority, will equip 50 carefully selected ferry operators and professionals — including captains, engineers, deckhands, and safety officers — with advanced safety and operational skills through a blend of virtual learning, mentorship, and hands-on practical training.

According to the state government, the programme is designed to entrench a sustainable culture of safety across Lagos waterways, which remain a critical component of the state’s expanding Blue Economy agenda.

A major highlight of the initiative is Lagos State’s strategic partnership with Interferry, a global ferry association with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization. The collaboration is expected to expose local ferry operators to international safety standards and global best practices in ferry operations.

“The safety of every passenger on our waterways remains non-negotiable. This programme reflects our unwavering commitment to building a world-class, efficient, and secure water transportation system for Lagos residents,” the Special Adviser stated.

Participants were urged to embrace the opportunity as pioneers of a new era in African ferry transportation, with a responsibility to champion professionalism, operational excellence, and safety standards across the industry.

With the launch of the initiative, Lagos State has once again demonstrated its leadership in maritime and transport development, setting a new benchmark for modern ferry safety systems across Africa.
