The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in collaboration with Interferry, has taken a major step towards enhancing ferry safety standards in Nigeria with the successful commencement of the practical phase of the Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP).
The inaugural in-person training session, held at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos, marked a significant milestone in the implementation of the pioneering safety initiative. The session brought together 50 participants for an intensive hands-on learning experience focused on ferry design and construction, vessel safety standards, maintenance procedures, and operational best practices within the maritime sector.
Facilitated by the Programme Coordinator, Engr. Ukeme Sunday, the training provided participants with direct exposure to industry operations and technical processes critical to ensuring safer ferry services across Nigeria’s waterways.
A major highlight of the session was the practical technical workshop led by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, a seasoned maritime professional with more than 40 years of experience in ferry design and construction. Drawing on decades of expertise, he offered participants valuable insights into vessel construction standards, maintenance requirements, safety protocols, and the operational realities of modern ferry transportation.

Speaking on the significance of the programme, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, noted that the practical training component was deliberately designed to complement the programme’s virtual mentoring and self-paced learning modules.
According to him, “The practical sessions provide participants with firsthand exposure to real-life operational environments and industry best practices. This experience is essential for building the technical competence and professional capacity required to promote safer, more efficient, and sustainable ferry operations across our waterways.”
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, building local capacity, and driving the sustainable growth of the blue economy through strategic partnerships and industry-focused initiatives.
LASWA expressed appreciation to Interferry for its sponsorship and continued support of the programme, as well as Caverton Marine for hosting and facilitating the maiden practical session. The Authority also acknowledged the unwavering support of the Lagos State Government in advancing maritime safety and workforce development within the sector.
