Tincan Port in Major Security Breakthrough as Customs Seizes ₦4.7bn Cannabis, Gun

The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the interception of 1,183 kilograms of Cannabis Indica and a firearm concealed inside a 40-foot container, following a coordinated examination by multiple security agencies.
Addressing journalists at the Command’s Enforcement Unit, officials said the discovery aligns with the 2026 International Customs Day theme, “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment.”
According to the Command, the container, numbered HLXU841299/0, was flagged during routine checks and subjected to intensive physical examination on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Officers of the NCS conducted the operation in collaboration with operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the declarant.
The inspection uncovered 55 jumbo bags containing 2,366 packages of Cannabis Indica, weighing a total of 1,183 kilograms. The seized narcotics carry an estimated street value of ₦4.732 billion. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the illegal shipment.
Also discovered was a Colt MK IV / Series 70 .45 caliber pistol (S419) with an empty magazine.
Customs officials said the drugs and firearm were concealed using three used vehicles—
• a Hyundai Santa Fe,
•  a Toyota Sienna, and
• a Toyota Matrix.
The Command confirmed that the seized narcotics will be handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, while the firearm will be transferred to the appropriate security agency.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Nigeria Customs Service warned that it will not tolerate drug trafficking or any form of transnational crime. The Command also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, PhD, MFR, for his continuous support and leadership in strengthening inter-agency cooperation.
The NCS assured the public of sustained vigilance across all ports of entry, emphasizing its determination to combat smuggling and protect society.
