In response to the escalating challenges of drug smuggling and human trafficking within Nigeria’s maritime sector, key stakeholders are set to gather for a high-level conference aimed at tackling these pressing security threats.

The event is organized by the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN) and the Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), the conference will take place today August 22, 2024, at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event, which is expected to draw participation from a wide array of maritime professionals, government officials, and international representatives, will be chaired by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Gboyega Oyetola.

The conference seeks to develop robust strategies to counteract the detrimental effects of illicit activities on shipping operations, seafarers, and the nation’s blue economy.

Given the serious implications of drug smuggling and human trafficking on Nigeria’s maritime industry, the conference aims to foster greater inter-agency cooperation, strengthen legal frameworks, and enhance the capacity of enforcement agencies.

With support from the National Drugs and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Embassies of the United States, Philippines, and France, the event will also involve international and local shipping companies committed to eradicating these crimes.

“We are at a critical juncture where we must address these maritime security threats head-on.”

“The collaboration among stakeholders at this conference is essential to ensuring that our maritime domain is secure and that Nigeria’s blue economy can reach its full potential,” stated a spokesperson for MASPAN.

The conference will not only discuss the current legal and operational challenges but will also seek to implement actionable solutions through the establishment of a dedicated working group.

This group will be tasked with ensuring that the resolutions agreed upon are effectively executed, ultimately contributing to the sustained growth and development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Attendance at the conference is by invitation only, and interested stakeholders are encouraged to contact the organizing committee to secure their participation.
