Former Director General of NIMASA and Public Policy Expert, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, has praised the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria. Dr. Dosunmu described the ruling as a “landmark judgment” that, although long overdue, arrives at a critical juncture in the nation’s history.
“The importance of this decision at this time cannot be overstated,” Dr. Dosunmu remarked.
“It will undoubtedly ensure the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the grassroots, represented by the 774 Local Governments.”
This ruling reinforces Nigeria’s federal structure, ensuring the independence of each tier of government, mirroring federal systems worldwide. Dr. Dosunmu urged state governors to accept the decision in good faith and view it as a necessary step for advancing democracy in the country.
Addressing local government chairmen, he emphasized the increased responsibility that comes with autonomy. “It should be seen as a call for accountability and more dedication to duty, because to whom much is given, much is expected,” he stated.
Dr. Dosunmu also called on residents of the 774 local governments to actively participate in governance. He encouraged them to demand accountability and transparency from their local leaders regarding fund allocation and project implementation.
In his statement, Dr. Dosunmu congratulated and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold initiative, which facilitated this historic judgment. He expressed optimism that this decision would open new opportunities for Nigerians as the country continues to consolidate its democratic journey.
