The Ogun 1 Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under the leadership of Comptroller James Ojo, has delivered a strong message to smugglers operating within its jurisdiction.

In just 23 days since assuming office in April, the command has recorded significant anti-smuggling achievements, making a total of 103 seizures with a cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of Three Hundred and Eighty Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Nine Hundred and Eleven Naira (₦380,370,911).

Comptroller Ojo revealed these remarkable feats during his maiden media chat in Abeokuta on Thursday, attributing the success to the intensive intelligence strategies and concerted efforts of various intelligence networks, including the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The seized items include 2,922 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 32 bales of used clothing, 1,603 cartons of frozen products, 90 sacks and 1,309 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, 1,596 pieces of used pneumatic tyres, and 22,600 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), among others.

Speaking on the significance of the seizures, Comptroller Ojo highlighted the adverse effects of the intercepted items on society. He emphasized the dangers of Cannabis Sativa, citing its potential influence on criminal activities such as armed robbery, banditry, and kidnapping.

Additionally, he pointed out the risks associated with the use of foreign-used pneumatic tyres, which pose a threat to motorists’ safety due to their expired lifespan.

Furthermore, Comptroller Ojo underscored the importance of curbing rice smuggling, noting that it hampers Nigeria’s economic growth and development by undermining efforts to encourage local production and self-sufficiency.

In addition to its anti-smuggling efforts, the command generated N14,628,661 in revenue through baggage assessment and auction sales of petroleum products.

Comptroller Ojo urged compliant traders to continue operating within the bounds of the law, while issuing a stern warning to economic saboteurs engaged in smuggling activities.

In conclusion, the Ogun 1 Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Ogun State.

Comptroller Ojo expressed gratitude for the support received from the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service and emphasized the collaborative efforts of officers and stakeholders in achieving these significant milestones.
