The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation (AALF) to nurture a new generation of leaders equipped to drive innovation, sustainability, and community development within Lagos State’s growing blue economy.

The partnership was formalised during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation to the LASWA headquarters, where both organisations agreed to collaborate on programmes focused on leadership development, youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.

Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on the Blue Economy,  Mr. Oludamilola Emmanuel, described leadership development as a critical investment in the future of the state’s waterways and maritime sector.

According to him, sustainable growth in the blue economy goes beyond infrastructure and policies, requiring visionary leaders, empowered communities, and strategic partnerships capable of driving long-term transformation.

“The future of the blue economy depends on the quality of leadership we cultivate today. Through this partnership with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation, we are creating opportunities for young people to acquire the skills, values, and exposure needed to become catalysts for sustainable development across our waterfront communities and the wider maritime sector,” he said.

Under the partnership, both organisations will implement leadership training programmes, youth development initiatives, environmental awareness campaigns, community outreach projects, and knowledge-sharing engagements aimed at strengthening human capital and promoting inclusive growth within Lagos’ waterways ecosystem.

Director of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation, Mr. AYO Akindele, described the collaboration as a significant step towards building a generation of responsible and impact-driven African leaders.

“Leadership remains one of Africa’s greatest assets. Developing capable leaders requires deliberate collaboration between public institutions and development organisations. Our partnership with LASWA will empower young Nigerians with the mindset, skills, and opportunities needed to create lasting social and economic impact while supporting the continued growth of Lagos State’s blue economy,” he said.

The collaboration aligns with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to leveraging the blue economy as a catalyst for economic diversification, job creation, environmental stewardship, and improved livelihoods.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to implementing impactful programmes that inspire leadership excellence, strengthen community resilience, and promote safe and sustainable waterways development across Lagos State.
