The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Seme Area Command has intensified efforts to strengthen security and trade facilitation through strategic engagements with traditional rulers and security agencies.

Comptroller Benedict Oramalugo, PhD, led a series of high-level visits between February 19 and 20, 2025, aimed at reinforcing collaboration for a safer and more efficient border environment.

During the visits, Comptroller Oramalugo met with the Oba Akran of Badagry and the Oba of Iberoko, acknowledging the pivotal role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and stability. He emphasized that effective collaboration between Customs and local authorities is essential for ensuring a secure and business-friendly atmosphere at the border.

In a bid to enhance inter-agency coordination, the Customs boss also held discussions with key security formations, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, the Nigerian Army’s 243 RECCE Battalion Regiment, the Nigerian Police Division in Badagry, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

These meetings focused on intelligence-sharing, strengthening border security, and fostering a unified approach to combating smuggling and transborder crimes.

Comptroller Oramalugo reiterated that stakeholder cooperation remains at the core of the Command’s strategy for improving revenue generation, boosting security, and supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.

“Our mission at Seme Area Command goes beyond revenue collection; it extends to ensuring national security and fostering economic development. Strong partnerships with traditional institutions and security agencies are crucial in achieving these objectives,” he stated.

He further highlighted his mandate from the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) upon assuming office at the Seme Command, stressing the need for synergy among security agencies to tackle smuggling effectively.

“I need your collaboration to succeed. I want your assurance that when we are overwhelmed with smugglers, you will stand with us to combat them. We are all working for the Nigerian state,” he affirmed.
