Dr. Hope Orivri, publisher of OnePage Africa and Chairperson of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC), has earned a doctorate in Communication for Development from the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Dr. Orivri was among ten scholars celebrated at the university’s 55th convocation ceremony, having completed her PhD program in Mass Communication. Her research focused on “Utilisation of WASH Behaviour Change Messages among Mothers of Under-5 Children in Lagos Urban Slums,” a study that garnered commendations for its impactful contributions to child health and community engagement.

As a PhD candidate, Orivri achieved notable recognition by winning the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition for doctoral students across African institutions. The competition, hosted by the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS) in collaboration with the South African Consulate in Lagos, was part of the 2023 Nelson Mandela Week activities.

Reflecting on her research, Dr. Orivri shared how her work has positively impacted communities in Lagos.

“Engaging with mothers in underserved areas such as Abete, Maracana, and Ago-Egun allowed me to address critical issues like handwashing, water storage, and sanitation. Hearing feedback from mothers about improvements in their children’s health after adopting my recommendations was deeply fulfilling,” she said.

Dr. Orivri also credited her journey as a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) expert to her studies and additional training with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Her research and community engagements have contributed to practical solutions in areas like safe water storage, hand hygiene, and sanitation practices.

Mrs. Jean Chiazor Anishere, SAN, Vice Chairperson of the NPCC, lauded Orivri’s academic and professional accomplishments.

“Dr. Hope Orivri’s dedication to research and her contributions to maritime journalism and community development are exemplary. Her achievements will continue to inspire others in the industry and beyond,” Anishere remarked.
